Stephanie (Page) Murphy, a 2002 graduate of Lock Haven University, now ��ܽ��Ƶ-Lock Haven, is making a lasting impact on the next generation of educators through her volunteerism.

As a special education teacher at Newport School District, Murphy brought her passion and expertise to CU’s recent Collaborating to Assist Teacher Candidate Hiring (CATCH) Conference, a student engagement event held across CU’s Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield campuses.

Murphy’s most memorable experience at the conference was serving as both a panelist and a mock interviewer. “I absolutely enjoyed sharing my journey as a teacher and offering feedback during the mock interviews,” she said. “It was exciting to see students take my suggestions seriously and make notes to improve.”

Murphy described the students she met as prepared and enthusiastic, emphasizing the unique value of the CATCH Conference as a fantastic event that equips aspiring educators eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible with practical skills for their teaching careers.

“I’ve been wanting to be more involved, and this felt like a great way to share my experiences as a teacher with student teachers,” she said. “I’m so glad I did – it was incredibly rewarding.”

For Murphy, volunteering wasn’t just about giving back; it was about remembering her own time at Lock Haven. “I loved my time as a student. Being a resident assistant taught me how to help others, and I felt well-prepared when I graduated,” she said.

She believes it’s important for alumni to volunteer to share their experiences with currents students – from their time on campus to their professional journey – anything they contribute will help prepare students for their future.

“The students are extremely excited to learn,” she said. “Which makes sharing your experiences so impactful.”

Murphy’s commitment to inspiring and mentoring students – not only from her alma mater, but from Bloomsburg and Mansfield – truly embodies the supportive spirit of The Haven Family.
